How to Play Ring of Fire: The Ultimate Party Game Guide

Kim Gamez

Ring of Fire is a classic party game that’s perfect for Friendsgiving, game nights, or any gathering where you want to keep the fun flowing! This game is great for breaking the ice, and each card has a different action that keeps everyone on their toes. Whether you’re playing with drinks, non-alcoholic options, or our Soberish Drops for a buzz without the booze, here’s everything you need to know to play Ring of Fire.

What You’ll Need:

  • A deck of cards
  • A full, sealed can of your favorite drink (or any drink you want as the “punishment” drink)
  • Your favorite drinks (alcoholic, non-alcoholic, or Soberish!)

Setting Up

  1. Arrange the Cards: Spread the deck of cards in a circle around the can in the center of your table. This setup represents the “Ring of Fire.”
  2. Gather the Players: Have everyone sit in a circle around the cards.
  3. Establish the Rules: Go over the card meanings (explained below) so everyone’s clear on what to do. Decide if you want to add any custom rules!

How to Play

The game moves clockwise, with each person taking turns drawing a card. Every card has a specific rule or action, which must be completed before the next person draws. After completing the action for their card, each player slides it under the can tab, building tension as one card after another is wedged under the tab. When the can finally pops open, the person whose card caused it to burst has to drink the contents of the can!

Card Rules:

Here’s what each card typically means in Ring of Fire. Feel free to modify these rules based on your group’s preferences!

  • Ace: Waterfall – Everyone starts drinking at the same time as the person who drew the card. You can only stop drinking when the person to your left stops, and it goes around the circle like a chain reaction.

  • 2: You – The person who drew the card picks someone else in the group to take a drink.

  • 3: Me – The person who drew the card drinks.

  • 4: Floor – Everyone has to touch the floor as quickly as possible. The last person to do so takes a drink.

  • 5: Guys – All guys in the group take a drink.

  • 6: Chicks – All the ladies in the group take a drink.

  • 7: Heaven – Everyone must raise their hands toward the ceiling. The last person to do so takes a drink.

  • 8: Mate – Choose someone to be your “mate” for the round. Whenever you drink, they drink too, and vice versa.

  • 9: Rhyme Time – The person who drew the card says a word, and the group goes in a circle, each person saying a word that rhymes with it. The first person to mess up or repeat a word takes a drink.

  • 10: Categories – The person who drew the card chooses a category (e.g., “Types of Fruit”), and the group goes around naming things in that category. The first person who can’t think of one or repeats a word takes a drink.

  • Jack: Make a Rule – The person who drew the Jack gets to create a rule that everyone must follow. Examples include “no saying names” or “drink with your non-dominant hand.” If someone breaks the rule, they take a drink.

  • Queen: Question Master – The person who drew the Queen is now the Question Master. If they ask someone a question and that person answers, the responder has to take a drink. The Question Master role remains until someone else draws a Queen.

  • King: Social Cheers – When a King is drawn, everyone raises their glass for a group cheers, and everyone takes a drink. It’s a chance for the whole group to share a toast to friendship, laughter, or whatever the King-card drawer wants to toast to.

Ending the Game

The game ends when the tab on the can pops open, and the person who placed the last card under it has to drink the contents. The anticipation builds as the can gets closer to opening, adding a fun element of suspense!

Variations and Tips

  • Non-Alcoholic Options: If you or your friends prefer to play without alcohol, try using mocktails or Soberish Drops in your drinks! You’ll still have a great time and can even mix things up by making unique “punishment” drinks for the can.
  • Customize the Rules: Add your own twist to the card meanings or create custom rules to make the game more personal and entertaining.
  • Play Responsibly: Know your limits and have fun. Ring of Fire is all about laughter and bonding with friends, so always keep it lighthearted and safe.

Ring of Fire is sure to bring laughs, surprises, and maybe even a bit of friendly competition to your Friendsgiving! Give it a go, and make sure to tag us if you post any photos or videos of the game in action. Have fun, stay safe, and cheers to an unforgettable Friendsgiving!
